Indonesia is an archipelago made up of a TON of islands, many with their own languages. You’ll learn how to say hello, thank you, etc. on Bali, then realize that’s Balinese and most of it doesn’t work in other islands. The majority of people just do Bali and the Gili islands, but there are heaps of other beautiful options that are far less crowded.

Bali

transportation outside the Denpasar airport is terrible. Taxi drivers will follow you around trying to rip you off. If you call an Uber, they’ll chase it away screaming and beating on it. Either arrange with an Uber to meet them offsite, or arrange transportation ahead of time.
avoid Kuta unless you absolutely have to surf. It’s the drunken-aussie part of Bali.
Ubud’s great! It’s in the center so no beaches, but quieter, great food, and nice temples to check out.

Gili Islands

Very popular, lots of Instagram spots (that swing in the ocean picture you’ve seen 1000x times).
There are three islands. Air is the most chill, T has the most parties, and Meno is for newlyweds.
Hallucinogenic mushrooms are huge here, normally as shakes.

Labuanbajo

Fly here to see the Komodo Islands (and dragons)

Amazing seafood night market every night
Out of the way, so not as many tourists

See the famous Komodo dragons, and if you have scuba certification, there’s some of the best scuba diving in the world here.

Activities Labuanbajo

Not a particularly interesting city by itself, but it’s the hub for great scuba diving and trips to the Komodo Islands. You can get here by a short flight or a very long ferry from Bali.

Areas Labuanbajo

hike this volcano for the sunrise. Most people leave Ubud really early to do this. I recommend instead heading there the day before, staying at Black Lava hostel (private rooms, hot tub, close to an amazing hot spring), and leaving at a reasonable time the next morning.

Activities Bali

Probably the most famous meal from Indonesia. It’s an (often spicy) fried rice.

Food

Picturesque destination with upscale hotels & tranquil ocean views, plus snorkeling & boat tours.

It’s a short ferry ride from Bali and has some amazing places to snorkel with manta rays.
